Hey, you should consume some new content!
I've been updating the site a bit lately, so there are some new things to look at! If you've been following my blog, or been to my show, you've seen my mechanical typography project, and I've given them their own page, which you can get to via the Projects page in the site banner. The other things I've added are my Mechanical Dancers, which I created for the show, and they now have their own section in the Different Worlds section. Have a look at the pages, let me know what y

Multi-Dimensional Urban Spaces - The Final Enmore Dancer
I never posted my personal favourite of the Dancers (so far). Whoops! But while I'm planning on doing more Dancers, this is the last Dancer piece I do with photos from around Enmore. It helps that I had a great reference for this, a classic B-boy pose, transitioning from one move to another. I tried a couple of things with the colouring, mixing some of the shades in the legs. The more you enjoy drawing these guys, the more you want to experiment. So, the exhibition is over, bu

Robotic B-boys 2 - Electric Boogaloo
My wife loves an Electric Boogaloo joke, and it's highly unlikely that I'll ever have a more apt time to make one. Here's my second robotic B-boy dancer, busting moves in the neighbourhood of Enmore in Sydney. Like I said before, the photos I took around Enmore will keep popping up for these. Here's a closer look at the artwork of the dancer. It got a good response when I posted it on instagram, so I guess I did something right? #finishedart #hiphop #streetart #scifi #culture

Mechanical Text - C
Getting the start of the alphabet is going well. I now have an ABC! This was another one that was kind of fun to sketch out. What do you think? It was fun to draw, but does it look good to you? #letters #lettering #finishedart #inking #sketches #scifi

Mechanical Text - B
*Sigh* Maybe, just maybe, I could have made life easier on myself by not getting really committed to the idea of making B a letter that transformed. Maybe. Who am I kidding? I'm a long-time Transformers nerd, and I'd never regret trying to do that. I'm actually really happy with how it came out. I did have to go through more sketching and planning stages with this one, but hell, it was worth it. I mean, look at this sketch. It's kind of ridiculous. Was it worth it? #letterin

Mechanical Text - 8
Eight was actually the final number I designed, so I had a bit of fun with it. In the penciling, I was borrowing some influences from some gaming art books I was given by a friend as a birthday present. I think that definitely leant to my making this number a bit...chunkier than many of my others. I do like how the influences from the books gave it a sense of movement, The large segment at the top looks like it's going to start moving side to side, while the stalks at the sid

Flashback - The Gentleman
Hey, I just found out The Gentleman's name! This is Robert Cornelius, the first person to take an image (a daguerrotype, not a photograph) of himself. So there you go, a little history lesson for us all. The Gentleman was another piece that really started out as an experiment. Summer and L'ermitage had been based on art nouveau paintings, but I wanted to see if I could take an image from the same period as those two, and turn it into an image in a similar style. Cornelius' d

Over the halfway point with the Mechanical numbers, here is number 6! #typography #finishedart #pencils #inking #sketches #scifi #robots

Flashback - The Battle of Brick Lane
This is really one of my personal favourites. After I'd done the Old Vic Tunnels piece, I definitely wanted to have another go at integrating my illustrations with my photography. This is the photo I ended up using, after one of my many trips to Brick Lane. I think it was one of a few I'd considered, but I found it worked best with the characters, and it's a great piece. I definitely had a few influences with the female character, mostly from Marvel. By now, everyone knows th

Mechanical Text - 4
Bolder colours than I've used for a lot of these, but the contrast can't be a bad thing. I did start off unsure how I wanted to structure my 4. In the end, the slanted version is a clearer silhouette, so it made sense to go with that. I think some of the features I ended up using in the design were quite tool-like. There's even a catch from my son's pram in there. So, number 4. I finished this just in time to use it to announce my 40th birthday, which is a bit egotistical, bu
