Impirium Alphabet
One of the great things about working on Impirium has been trying brand new stuff. Making an alphabet was a first, and I was pretty much working from scratch, and trying to strike a balance between making it legible and making it look alien. I made a revision of the letters 'P' and 'R', as the originals were too similar. For my first alphabet, only having to revise two letters felt pretty good. I was originally going to do a thing where I rotated the letters to make them more

Mechanical lettering experiments - A
I started my new typography project with 'A' because, well, if you're starting an alphabet, that's where you begin. I wasn't sure what type of lower-case 'a' to go for, so I did both, and asked for feedback on my instagram, which led to me combining the two version. Here's the original sketches, which, like my Impirium sketches, I stuck into Photoshop, to digitally ink and clean up. Here's a close-up look at the revised lower-case 'a', which is actually made entirely of maipu

3D Printed Chordir statue!
Another cool first for me, I just got this guy from Zeal 3D printing! I now have a solid, 3D printed version of my Chordir design for Impirium, which is the first time I've had a solid version of something I drew! This little fella will be representing me at Surtex 2019. Here's a few images of it, what do you think?

How I developed the Chordir
As I said on the Impirium page on the site, the Chordir were basically the first race I created in my Impirium designs. I caught onto the distinctive shape of the head of the Hammerhead Shark, so the first thing I did was try out some helmet design, to go over the head of a Hammerhead. From that basic design, I made some class variations, so that there's a standard, marine and sniper, which became Wardens, Cannoneers and Arbalests as the game developed. I wanted to have some

I'm back!Surtex 2019!
It's come around again! Last year I headed over to New York with ArtSHINE for Surtex 2018. I won't be there in person this year (sorry fans!), but ArtSHINE will be taking my work over again, so anyone looking for some great art to license can catch up with Vinh and Stuart there! #ArtSHINE #brightstarsJames Mathurin @mathurinjames. Using a combination of traditional pencil, pen and ink, #photography, and #digital#techniques, James’ art shows move through alternate pasts, pres

Impirium Shields
There's still plenty of Impirium stuff that I haven't been able to share yet, so here is a whole new area - shields. There were already a few designs ready to go when I started drawing, and I wanted to add a few distinctive shapes. This one was actually supposed to be a practical design, something that protects the body, while leaving an opening for a firearm. These two are designs that were just more visually distinctive, one of which I liked so much you've probably seen it

Impirium - The Chordir
So, hey, first update: the development title of Primal : Khaos has been updated to Impirium! Second, I'm going to be sharing the backstory and designs for some of the races I've created and expanded on in Impirium over the next few weeks, so here, to start, is the Chordir. From an academic journal: Although no species sees itself in the same fashion as they are seen by other races, it is said by many that there is no greater contrast between the self-image of the Chorda and

Happy New Year 2019!
I've been absent from the blog for a while, but it's time to get back into it. Hello! I've got a new ongoing project and a few other things I'm working on, so here's a few sketches of things that I'll be putting up in the New Year. #letters #typography #sketches
