YES, this is the design for number 6 flipped 180°. I'm allowed to do that because, despite the protestations of fans of the number 9, that's all it is. Besides, I didn't just flip it. Well, the lines I did just flip, but that's not the whole story. I actually had to redo the shading and colours, so there is definitely more to it , honest. What do you reckon? #finishedart #pencils #inking #lettering #letters

Eight was actually the final number I designed, so I had a bit of fun with it. In the penciling, I was borrowing some influences from some gaming art books I was given by a friend as a birthday present. I think that definitely leant to my making this number a bit...chunkier than many of my others. I do like how the influences from the books gave it a sense of movement, The large segment at the top looks like it's going to start moving side to side, while the stalks at the sid

Bolder colours than I've used for a lot of these, but the contrast can't be a bad thing. I did start off unsure how I wanted to structure my 4. In the end, the slanted version is a clearer silhouette, so it made sense to go with that. I think some of the features I ended up using in the design were quite tool-like. There's even a catch from my son's pram in there. So, number 4. I finished this just in time to use it to announce my 40th birthday, which is a bit egotistical, bu

I keep looking at number 3 and being reminded of a scorpion's tail. Looks like it would be a fun one to animate... I'm trying to make more use of the design tools I have at the sketching stage, which you can see in the original sketch. So here we go, we'll have enough to count on one hand soon. #pencils #lettering #letters #inking #typography #scifi #finishedart

Still going with the numbers, now I'm up to number 2. I thought I'd go for some brighter colours, to keep the variety up. The sketch ended up using some piston and visor action going on. I was really happy with this one, and there's more to come. #pencils #inking #finishedart #scifi #letters #lettering #typography

I had trouble working out whether I wanted '1' to just be a vertical stick, or if I wanted it to have the serifs that would make it more distinct from an 'i'. Then I realised, I could do both, and I made my first transforming number! So, as you can see, this is a serif-style 1, but it can also close up into its shell, and become a sans-serif 1! The colouring definitely helped here, as it let me differentiate the inner layers from the outer. because the colours would be import

OK, not to be confused with the letter 'O', this is very definitely the number zero. See, it even has a dash going through it. Looking at it, i think I borrowed the colour scheme from the Transformer Dirge. #lettering #letters #sketches #finishedart #typography

Some more typography and Photoshop skills
As promised, here are some more examples of how I used my vowels as a pattern. The first one was more complex than it perhaps looks - I had to erase this guy's t-shirt, and do two versions of the pattern, one with black lines, and one with a white outline. It was worth it though, as I'm really proud of how this one came out. This other one is more conventional, but involved trying out a different pattern. #mechanicals #lettering #letters #typography #finishedart #photography

Put some vowels in your kid's bedroom (OK, that sounds weird)
As promised, I've been busy with the old Photoshop. Having a complete set of vowels meant that I could start using them as a pattern, and putting them onto some things. Talking with Vinh at ArtSHINE, we decided that using them as a wallpaper / mural design would be a good look, and I am (a) Happy he suggested that, as it's a cool idea, and (b) Very happy that my Photoshop skills let me mock up these images. I mean, look at them! Wouldn't these have been cool rooms to have as

The vowels are finished! I've made a few patterns out of the vowels as a set, so I'll put a few of those up over the next few weeks as well. In the meantime, please enjoy the letter U! #sketches #letters #lettering #finishedart #typography
