I had a really good meeting with the rest of Yelkrab this week, and got to see some of the environments that these characters are going to be battling in, and the textures that are going to be going on the 3D models. These are going to be good!
The design I wanted to share this week isn't named yet, but as you can see from the early sketches, it's based on a Rhino skull. I wasn't trying to just make a rhino-alien (Dr Who already beat me to that), but I thought it was a great shape. I turned the teeth into a visor, so that it became a creature with eyes low on its head, and a large crest above it.
The first design was the Warden. As the class that it is the standard grunt, it made sense to use that as a template. Apart from the shape, the characteristic feature of this design is the many interlocking plates that make it up.
The next design is the Arbalest. As the long distance/stealth class, I slimmed down the Warden version, and had less glowing highlights.
Finally, in lumbers the Cannoneer. Going in the opposite direction from the Arbalest, the Cannoneer is a bulkier, beefed-up version of the Warden. The design is meant to show that this is someone who is going to be moving slowly, with heavy weaponry, and will need to be able to take a good few shots, and just keep going.
And finally, here's the 3D model for the head. The next few stages of development for this one should be great.
